Svým zaměřením na opomíjené souvislosti vzniku a rozvoje moderní sociologie jako nástroje výkladu moderní společnosti reaguje na současné proměny sociologické agendy a na nové výzvy spojené s voláním po začlenění perspektiv, jež byly v dosavadním kánonu opomíjeny. Výchozí teze celé knihy se opírá o přesvědčení, že je do okruhu zájmů sociologie, který byl historicky spojen s otázkami třídy, genderu a sexuality, nezbytné začlenit otázky koloniální „moci“ a imperiální nadvlády. Pro české prostředí a české publikum je překlad knihy jednak systematickým uvedením do problémů souvisejících s kolonialismem a impériem, jednak vysoce aktuální kontextualizací myšlenek velkých sociologických myslitelů. Je rovněž vítaným obeznámením s nejnovější tematizací agendy sociální teorie a obecně výkladů vývoje společnosti. Nepochybně jde také o ukázku proměny současné sociologické argumentace, v níž se dostávají ke slovu mnohé dosud opomíjené problémy koloniální a imperiální dominance. Description in English The book is an exceptional contribution to debates on the nature of modern society. By focusing on the often-overlooked connections between the emergence and development of modern sociology as a tool for interpreting modern society, it responds to contemporary shifts in the sociological agenda and the growing call to incorporate perspectives that have been neglected in the existing canon. The central thesis of the book is based on the conviction that sociology—historically concerned with issues of class, gender, and sexuality—must also incorporate questions of colonial “power” and imperial dominance. For the Czech context and readership, the translation of this book serves both as a systematic introduction to issues related to colonialism and empire and as a highly relevant contextualization of the ideas of major sociological thinkers. It also provides a welcome engagement with the latest developments in social theory and broader interpretations of societal evolution. Undoubtedly, the book exemplifies the transformation of contemporary sociological discourse, where many previously overlooked issues of colonial and imperial dominance are now gaining attention.
