There are a number of common shortcomings that are repeated in the design of many waterworks throughout Southern Africa that are detrimentally affecting performance efficiency of purified water quality which is often very much below its best attainable level. The most common shortcomings inherent in the waterworks design are identified and discussed in this paper.
