Kniha mapuje první dvě dekády dějin fotografie v Čechách a na Moravě se zvláštním zřetelem k dosud přehlížené fotografii na papíru a s přesahy do širšího středoevropského kontextu. Na základě rozsáhlého průzkum archivních fondů, muzejních sbírek, dobového tisku a odborných publikací autorka přibližuje šest vzájemně propojených tematických okruhů: první zprávy a úvahy o fotografických experimentech na papíru ve střední Evropě, roli knížete Klemense Metternicha coby prvního sběratele fotografií a zprostředkovatele fotografických vynálezů W. H. F. Talbota v Rakouském císařství, proces zdokonalování fotografických metod v polovině 40. let 19. století a úloha, kterou v tomto procesu sehrál Anton Martin na vídeňské polytechnice, rozmach profesionální portrétní produkce na přelomu 40. a 50. let 19. století, činnost a možnosti fotoamatérů v 50. letech 19. století (na příkladu Richarda Metternicha a Paula Ratha), první využití fotografie v historických vědách, zvláště v dějinách umění a v památkové péči, v muzeologii a v paleografii.

The book explores the first two decades of photography history in Bohemia and Moravia, with a particular emphasis on the previously overlooked paper photography and its connections to the broader Central-European context. Based on extensive research of archival records, museum collections, period press, and scholarly publications, the author explores six interconnected thematic areas: 1. The first reports and reflections on photography together with some of the earliest photographic experiments on paper in central Europe. 2. The role of Prince Klemens Metternich as the first collector of photographs and facilitator of W. H. F. Talbot’s photographic inventions in the Austrian Empire. 3. Improvements of photographic methods and materials in the mid-1840s and the pivotal role of Anton Martin at the Vienna Polytechnic. 4. The rise of professional portrait photography on paper in the late 1840s and early 1850s. 5. The activities and possibilities of amateur photographers in the 1850s (exemplified by Richard Metternich and Paul Rath). 6. The first application of photography in historical research, especially in art history and monument preservation, museology, and palaeography.
