It is hypothesised that the peripheral location and lack of rapid adrenergic regulation of muscles may result in greater energy expenditure for the same thermogenic effect as observed in brown adipose tissue. This may be a contributing factor to the obesity resistance observed in mice utilising this mechanism. Our ongoing investigation focuses on the putative molecular mechanisms that distinguish muscle physiology of A/J and C57BL/6 mice, such as sarcolipin-dependent uncoupling of the endoplasmic calcium pump and changes in the formation of mitochondrial supercomplexes. A detailed understanding of these mechanisms could reveal new pharmacologic targets for the prevention of obesity.
