    In this publication, we quantitatively determine the ratio of fast blue and slow red photoluminescence in silicon quantum dots. We present an observation that silicon quantum dots with relatively higher fast blue photoluminescence component systematically exhibit lower external photoluminescence quantum. We explain this trend as an inherent property of the system, by presenting a model of the optical performance of an ensemble of quantum dots with widely varying optical characteristics.
