Mixing liquids in mechanically agitated vessels is operation commonly used in the production industry. There exist numerous “standard” combinations of vessel and impeller geometries, for which the mixing characteristics are well known and sufficiently described. In the biopharmaceutical industry, however, these standard configurations are often modified to meet the increased requirements for ease cleaning and maintaining a sterile environment during the production process. The bioreactors are often designed as unbaffled vessels with the impeller mounted eccentrically to suppress the central vortex formation. In addition, the magnetically driven impellers are sometimes employed eliminating the need of sterile stuffing box, which results in a relatively small impeller mounted in the vicinity of the vessel bottom. Contrary to the standard configurations, the mixing characteristics of such configurations are practically unknown.
