AnnotationThe use of sewage sludge on soil is a much-debated issue, mainly due to the content of inorganic, organic, microbial pollutants, and microplastics. The safe use of sludge-derived biochar (sludge-char) on soil is also questioned, mainly because of the content of organic pollutants and the doubts about their removal in the pyrolysis process. The presentation will include the efficiency of removal of selected organic pollutants during pyrolysis of sewage sludge, which in some cases exceeds 99 % (depending on pyrolysis parameters). It will present the procedure for certification of sludge-char as a soil improver in the Czech Republic, which has already been successfully carried out in the case of the pyrolysis unit at the Bohuslavice - Trutnov WWTP. The presentation will also include a discussion on the influence of the moisture content of the treated sludge on the properties of pyrolysis products, which is often underestimated in laboratory experiments and can thus distort the results transferred to up-scale.
