The study focuses on the phenomenon of narrator’s commentary in selected works of Czech literature from a developmental perspective. First, the study brings an overview and analysis of the theoretical grasps of this specific phenomenon. Consequently, it defines concrete types of this phenomenon present in the given period. This typology is based on the forms and functions of narrator’s commentary and follows their historical metamorphoses using particular works of Czech literature, of which the authors believe that they can be considered typical, for exemplification. As a conclusion, the study shows the rich variety of means used for the purpose of narrator’s commentary that are inherent to particular developmental periods of Czech literary narratives and their functioning.
