The paper focuses on some aspects of the plural identity of the author in modern prose works. The novel by Ludvík Vaculík, Czech Dream Book (1981 samizdat, 1981 in German, 2019 in English), is chosen as an example. The issue of the plural identity of the author will be explored on several levels: (1) The identity of the author as an extra-textual subject. In this part the paper will discuss the issue of parallel or „competing“ writing: (2) Identity of the author-writer of a non-literary unit (Vaculík´s correspondence with his friends, with a mistress ). (3) The identity of the intra-textual subject (the narrator): how positions 1 and 2 enter as thematic lines into the novel. The paper will show the issue as a complex phenomenon, where the identity of the extra-textual and the intra-textual subject is not performed as separable, but on the contrary, forms the essence of Vaculík's artistic method.
