In this work, wedemonstrate selected optimization changes in thesimple design of filtration masks to increase particle removal efficiency(PRE) and filter quality factor by combining experiments and numericalmodeling. In particular, we focus on single-layer filters fabricatedfrom uniform thickness fibers and double-layer filters consistingof a layer of highly permeable thick fibers as a support and a thinlayer of filtering electrospun nanofibers. For single-layer filters,we demonstrate performance improvement in terms of the quality factorby optimizing the geometry of the composition. We show significantlybetter PRE performance for filters composed of micrometer-sized fiberscovered by a thin layer of electrospun nanofibers. This work is motivatedand carried out in collaboration with a targeted industrial developmentof selected melamine-based filter nano- and micromaterials.
