Anotace: This review summarises some of the main points made in Bailey's book and demonstrates that women's music-making in the nineteenth-century US-American South was diverse. The culture captured in the book distinguished itself from the European cultural scene due to differences in social structures, economic and political infrastructures, and aspects of class and agency. The review discusses chances and challenges presented by this publication's structural and contextual organisation and illustrations, and points to research lacunae and potential areas of further research in the field.
