Our interest in the purification of dendrimers1 (which typically involves a sepa-ration of target molecules larger than 1 kDa from reagents in a range 100 - 500 Da) steered us towards organic solvent nanofiltration2 (OSN), however, most commercial membranes for OSN are too tight for our purposes and need to operate at high pressure. Thus, we adopted tight ultrafiltration regenerated cellu-lose membranes (1 and 3 kDa MWCO Ultracel®), intended for aqueous appli-cations but stable in most organic solvents. To better understand their behavior, evaluate their performance and to allow for optimization of the separation pro-cess, their rejection and permeance characteristics in selected solvents were tested.
