This reflective essay is devoted to women’s engagement in nineteenth-century musical culture, both on Czech territory in particular and in Central Europe more generally. It offers a discussion of approaches through which women’s impact on nineteenth-century Czech musical culture may prove insightful. These approaches include scrutiny of public print media, private sources, encyclopaedias, and musical scores. These four routes are demonstrated in the essay by way of short examples, suggesting food for thought for further research.
