Kniha představuje souhrnné dějiny indické filosofie od jejich počátků až po začátek novověku. Analyzuje kategorie a pojmy předbuddhistické filosofie (védy, bráhmanské texty a upanišady i indický materialismus (lókájata), myšlení Buddhovo, džinismus, klasické brahmanské myšlenkové systémy (sánkhja, jóga, vaišéšika, njája, mimánsá) apod. Jádrem knihy jsou však dějiny filosofie buddhistické a jednotlivých škol a myslitelů buddhistických. Závěr knihy je věnován védántě. Kniha obsahuje bohatý, editory doplněný poznámkový aparát, úvodní studii, která přibližuje a kontextualizuje Bondyho Poznámky k dějinám filosofie, se zřetelem k Indické filosofii, a závěrečnou studii, která zkoumá různé metodologické a historické přístupy ke zkoumání dějin indické filosofie.

The book represents a comprehensive history of Indian philosophy from its origins to the early modern period. It analyses the categories and concepts of pre-Buddhist philosophy (like the Vedas, the Brahmanas and the Upanishads) and Indian materialism ( lokāyata), the thought of Buddha, Jainism, the classical Brahmanas systems of thought (Sankhya, Yoga, Vaisheshika, Nyāya, Mīmānsa), etc. The core of the book, however, is the history of Buddhist philosophy and of the various schools and philosophers of Buddhism. The end of the book is devoted to Vedanta. The book contains a rich editor’s note apparatus, an introductory study that introduces and contextualizes Bondy’s Notes on the History of Philosophy and particularaly Indian Philosophy, and a concluding study that examines various methodological and historical approaches to the study of the history of Indian philosophy.
