Tématem článku je přítomnost Herderovsko-Humboldtovského odkazu v antropologii Franze Boase. Herderovy teze týkající se původu jazyka a Humboldtovo myšlení o jazyce jakožto “vnitřní formě”, která doprovází rozvoj ducha, ohlašuje universální a partikulární a razí tak novou cestu pro myšlení lidstva v jeho jednotě a rozmanitosti.Tento článek ukazuje, že přestože antropologie Franze Boase vznikala na americké půdě, zůstala prostoupena německou kulturou: používá právě ono filologické pole, které vyznačil Herder a Humboldt, aby bojovala proti rasismu fyzické antropologie.

The article deals with the Herdero-Humboldtian legacy of Franz Boas’ anthropology. Herder’s theses on the origin of language and the Humboldtian thought of language as an “internal form” accompanying the development of the mind articulate the universal and the particular, opening up a new way of thinking about humanity in its unity and diversity. The present paper shows that Franz Boas’ anthropology uses the philological terrain marked out by Herder and Humboldt in order to overcome racialism in physical anthropology. In that sense, his anthropology remains rooted in German Völkerkunde, although it was forged in American soil.
