V 8. Description in English In the development of the naked Aphrodite, the most critical impulses came from Mesopotamia via Syrian and Phoenician city-states. Due to its geographical position, Cypriot Greeks maintained much closer contacts with them than inhabitants of other Greek cities did. In the 8th – 6th centuries BC, we find echoes of Near Eastern depictions of the naked goddess of sexuality above all in Cyprus. This island, therefore, seemed predestined to create a specifically Greek version of this goddess. However, no such thing happened, even though Cyprus established very close contacts with the leading Greek cultural centres in the 5th – 4th century BC. The story of the Cypriot Aphrodite demonstrates that even though the Near East significantly influenced the image of this goddess, the most significant changes occurred in classical Athens.
