A multi-level systematic study of taxonomically challenging genus Callitriche was conducted, including 346 individuals of 25 taxa from 21 mostly European countries, using flow cytometry, chromosome counting, direct sequencing of ITS and trnT-trnL DNA and RFLPs of the ITS region. The paper reconstructed the phylogeny of the genus, revealed remarkable intraspecific genetic variation within several lineages, outlined the origin of selected polyploids and demonstrated the occurrence of four hybrids. Two hybrids were newly described as Callitriche ×nyrensis and C. brutia nothosubsp. neglecta. The poorly known taxon C. brutia var. naftolskyi was newly reclassified at the subspecies level.
