Our present study demonstrates moderate growth promotion of cereals by protein hydrolysates and manifest complex interactions between hydrolysates, soil phosphorus, and plant symbionts and pathogens. The differences between the pot and the field experiments indicate limited transferability of pot results to field conditions. No synergistic effects of hydrolysates and AMF inoculation on plant growth were observed. Nevertheless, feather hydrolysate augmented AMF root colonisation as well as frequency of arbuscules and vesicles/spores in wheat and quantum yield of photosynthetic apparatus by AMF in barley. Our study also showed, for hitherto unreported, a strong interaction between environmental conditions, biostimulants and fungal disease.
