Úvodní esej, ve které autor pojednává o „zastřené historii” čechoslovakismu jako historickém, ideologickém a analytickém pojmu. Nejprve pojednává stávající historickou literaturu k tématu s důrazem na celkové přístupy k tématu a na aspekty a problémy čechoslovakismu a českoslovenství, které stály dosud v centru odborného zájmu. Zadruhé se snaží pomocí historie pojmů (Begriffsgeschichte) a jednoho z jejích nejvýznamnějších představitelů, Reinharta Kosellecka, nastínit, co je třeba vzít v úvahu při systematickém chápání dějin čechoslovakismus jako slova, jako konceptu a jako historické reality, s jeho specifickými polyvalencemi, které se měnily dynamicky v čase. Závěrečná část eseje poskytuje celkový vhled do struktury svazku a hlavních argumentů jednotlivých studií.

An introductory essay, in which the author tackles the „hazy history” of Czechoslovakism as a historical, ideological and analytical concept. First, he examines existing historical literature on the topic, interested mainly in which aspects and issues of Czechoslovakism have received the most attention in existing research and how authors have approached them and the subject in general. Second, he strives to outline—with the help of conceptual history (Begriffsgeschichte) and one of its foremost representatives, Reinhart Koselleck—what must be taken into account in a systematic understanding of the history of Czechoslovakism as word, concept and historical reality, with its specific polyvalences that dynamically transformed over time. Finally, he provides a general introduction into the structure of the volume and the overall arguments of the individual studies.
