This work is focused on the optimization of preparation and purification of starting CsCl and HfCl4 with the goal to prepare high purity and quality Cs2HfCl6 single crystals. However, the direct synthesis of Cs2HfCl6 is complicated due to low sublimation temperature of HfCl4 and its high hygroscopicity. The Cs2HfCl6 single crystals were grown by unseeded vertical Bridgman method in sealed quartz ampules with various ampule designs. Prepared Cs2HfCl6 single crystals were characterized using X-ray fluorescence, X-ray diffraction, and thermal analyses to determine the purity, phase content, and thermal properties. Furthermore, the optical, luminescence, and scintillation measurements on shaped optical elements were performed to analyze the scintillation performance of the Cs2HfCl6 crystals.
