Často se předpokládá, že termín “vědomí” má intuitivní a jednoznačný význam, jejž nelze srozumitelným způsobem explikovat. Tato předmluva popisuje jak hlavním cílem tohoto svazku je uvést právě tento předpoklad v pochybnost a zkoumat různorodost pojetí vědomí, která se ve filosofii od novověku objevují.

Often it is supposed that the term “consciousness” has an intuitive and unambiguous meaning which cannot be explicated in any comprehensible way. This preface describes how the main aim of the volume is to throw doubt on precisely this assumption and to inquire into the variety of conceptions of consciousness that have appeared in philosophy since the early-modern period.
