We present a detailed study investigating structure, thermal, transport and magnetic properties of vanadium mononitride. Pure vanadium mononitride ceramics with a stoichiometry very close to ideal composition VN was synthesized by ammonolysis of ammonium vanadate followed by sintering in NH3/N2 atmosphere. The detailed chemical and thermochemical analysis as well as transport properties measurement reveal stoichiometric composition of VN. The low temperature electrical and thermal transport measurements show superconducting transition at 8 K, a gradual structural phase transition below 250 K and a high temperature phase decomposition accompanied by V2N formation. The electronic structure calculations are correlated with the analysis of transport and thermal properties revealing an essential role of electron-phonon coupling and strong anharmonic effects.
