Negative effects of major ions on the extraction efficiency of trace metals using an EME system were observed, all the trace metals studied showed similar results. Higher effects were observed in the case of Ca2+ and Mg2+ since the extractant used as organic phase (DEHPA) has higher affinity for divalent cations. Presence of major inorganic cations has direct bearing on EME efficiency and must be taken into account for EMEs of saline samples. Despite of this, the optimized method has been successfully applied to the analysis of different saline samples.
