Zabývat se Masarykovou Českou otázkou (1885) neznamená pouze návrat do doby před 120 lety. 'Otázka' po smyslu české existence, jíž Masaryk oslovoval českou společnost v devadesátých letech 19. století, se v naší radikálně proměněné současnosti zdá zneklidňující a problematická: Představuje dnes ještě aktuální téma? Česká otázka je podle Masaryka otázkou, co je česká humanita, a v tomto smyslu je nutné ji chápat jako stálou konfrontaci mezí tím, jak žijeme, a ideálem, ke kterému směřujeme. Uskutečňování humanity má být naplněním vědomí příslušnosti k národu, tak jako i každého filosofického směřování, bez nichž naše existence nutně ztrácí oprávnění, postrádá svůj 'reformní' smysl. Ačkoli se jeví jako ideál opírající se o náboženský světový názor, stává se smyslem českých dějin, resp. národním programem, který musí určovat taktiku na poli domácí a zahraniční politiky. Masaryk pečlivě zkoumá otázku smyslu české národní totožnosti a vytváří ideu českého národa, jenž má být nositelem i záštitou ideálů pravé humanity.

To be concerned with Masaryk's work The Czech Question (1895) does not mean only to return to the time of 120 years ago. The 'Question' of meaning of the Czech existence with which Masaryk addressed the Czech society during the 1890s, seems to be disconcerting and problematic at our radically changed present time. Is this question still relevant? The Czech Question represents according to Masaryk the question of Czech humanism, and in this sense it is a matter of necessity to understand it as an ever-lasting confrontation between our way of living and the ideal we are approaching. To bring this humanity about shall be a condition of the fulfilment of our national identity, as well as every philosophical orientation, without these our existence urgently loses not only its justification, but its 'reformatory' sense as well. Although this ideal appears to be rooted in a religious world-view, it turns out to be the sense of Czech history, or turns out to be a national programme which has to set the national and international policy. Masaryk rigorously investigated the question of the Czech national identity and created the idea of the Czech nation which shall be a bearer and safeguard of true humanity.
