AnnotationElectron Spin Resonance investigations allow to attribute a broad absorption band below the band-to-band transition of ZnO:Co to photoionization transitions of Co-ions. This absorption, with the onset at about 2.4–2.6 eV, is due to cobalt recharging, as concluded from the photo-ESR and pulsed ESR experiments. In these experiments light sensitive ESR signals of Co2þ and shallow donor are observed. Their response to light favors cobalt 2þ to 3þ photoionization.
