    As the extracellular matrix (ECM) and matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are important regulators of plasticity, learning, and memory, age-related changes in the ECM composition are major determinants of the onset and development of the brain neurodegenerative disorders. The role of ECM has largely a dual “face” where beneficial and deleterious effects prevail depending on the actual state of the tissue and more study is necessary to understand the diverse roles of these molecules
