AnnotationThe quantification and localization of greenhouse gases (GHG) sources and sinks is a high research priority for understanding the global carbon cycle, as well as for designing systems for monitoring the effectiveness of GHG control and emission reduction measures. Tall towers started to be used as GHG observational infrastructure in the 1990´s. Currently, a European tall tower network is built under ICOS (Integrated Carbon Observation System) ensuring long-term observations (20+ years). The Atmospheric Station (AS) Křešín u Pacova designed exclusively for scientific purposes and according to ICOS recommendations consists of a 250 m tall tower and starts operation in 2013. It is a first class research infrastructure in Europe. Assigned the function of the Czech National Monitoring Point, it provides high quality data on GHGs, air quality (aerosols, reactive gases) and meteorological parameters. The AS highlight is the combination of measurements for several atmospheric programs, which prefigures the monitoring super-sites envisioned in the coming years. The AS is adjacent to further important monitoring and research infrastructures together forming the co-located station Košetice – Křešín u Pacova. The AS Křešín u Pacova provides a unique multidisciplinary research opportunity and is an open access research infrastructure.
