The cryoseston communities (snow algae and fungi) of persisting snow fields in the Bulgarian Rhodope Mountains were surveyed by light microscopy. By the end of May 2011, numerous, although often scattered, snow fields in the highest parts of the central Rhodope Mountains from 1598 to 2186 m were sampled, some snowfields were slightly reddish (peak Snezanka, Golyama Syutka). In this psychrophilic environment, mainly Chlorophyta were found: Chloromonas cf. nivalis, Chloromonas brevispina, Ch. rostafinski, Cystococcus nivicolus, Pseudococcomyxa adherens/simplex, Stichococcus nivalis. Members of other taxonomic groups were, Chrysophyceae: Monas sp., Bacillariophyceae: Hantzschia amphioxys, Diatoma hiemale var. mesodon; Cyanobacteria: Aphanocapsa nivalis; Aphanothece clathrata, iron-bacteria: cf. Leptothrix ochracea; Fungi: Selenotila nivalis, Chionaster nivalis/ecornis, cf. Micromyces fischerii; Deuteromycetes: cf. Helminosporium and some unidentified filamentous fungi. The cyanobacterium Aphanocapsa nivalis is a new species for Bulgaria. Aphanothece clathrata was determined for the first time in cryoseston. Macrosclereids of freshwater Porifera are new finding in cryoseston.
