The paper was presented on the occasion of the 1500th anniversary of the coming of Saints Cyril and Methodius to Great Moravia. The account is a reflection on legal parallels between Byzantine laws and the nascent Great Moravian state. It is shown, how Byzantine law being based on Roman law and hence its affinity with Western Europe helped to define the Great-Moravian state and how it contributed to the development of Old Slavonic culture and legal terms, especially with reference to issues regarding witchcraft, poisons, and potions.
