AnnotationPaper deals with crack extension under mode I in a 3D crystal of bcc iron with a small Cu inhomogeneity in front of the crack via 3D atomistic simulations by molecular dynamics. The results show that after fast Cu penetration crack extension differs from that in pure bcc iron. While in pure bcc Fe the crack front remains straight during brittle crack extension, in the Fe-Cu crystal crack front wave of the type 3/2 l arises, modulated by shorter atomic waves. Wave minimum is at Cu-particle since Cu retards locally the crack due to changes in the stress field after the penetration. As a consequence, acoustic emission on crack faces is corrugated as well.
