Application of two NDE methods - Acoustic Emission (AE) and Nonlinear Elastic Wave Spectroscopy (NEWS) along with loading and deformation history is discussed in the contribution. AE enables real-time detection and localization of damage initiation and growth during material stimulation, while NEWS methods provide retrieval of material changes without any loading. The common employment of both methods is effective as they can use the same transducers and devices. The utilization of common equipment can substantially reduce cost of SHM system, which incorporates also monitoring of mechanical and other physical quantities. A very good correspondence of defective zones revealed by both NDE methods, along with their complementarity is documented on fatigue damage monitoring of complex aircraft parts and on static loading damage of civil structure roof beams.
