This work is focused on methods and algorithms tailored to the direct solution of large sparse symmetric positive-definite linear systems arising from the application of the finite element method in solid continuum mechanics. A sparse direct solver based on the methods and algorithms proposed in the previous work is implemented in Fortran within the framework of the in-house multi-purpose finite element code PMD. The performance results for several large real-world engineering problems are presented to demonstrate the efficiency of the sparse direct solver’s implementation in comparison to the PMD’s existing frontal solver.
