In the first half of last century the tradition was established, which analysed the development of technology in close connection with its social consequences and, in particular, as an important means of social progress. In the Czech intellectual environment, the idea of the close relationship between science and technology to culture has its nearly century-old tradition. For the Czech environment is also typical the theme of consequences of scientific and technical conduct, portrayed in art; here we can name, for example, Karel Čapek. Many ideas from that period – e.g. that science and technology should be perceived and considered as a cultural phenomenon – is currently appearing again in other contexts, most recently for example in relation to innovative cultures.
