Specific clusters of filamentous, false-branched cyanobacteria, isolated from littoral mat samples of coastal lakes of the Larsemann Hills region were studied by polyphasic approach. This morphotype has several characters that corresponds to traditional families Leptolyngbya, or Pseudophormidium Schizothrix. Based on the results of sequencing (16S rRNA gene) and cytology has been described a new genus Plectolyngbya (P. hodgsonii). Plectolyngbya hodgsonii apparently occurs in several lakes of the Antarctic continental type, under very special conditions (littoral, with average temperature lower than 3oC during the Antarctic summer, with periodic drying and freezing more than 8 months of the year).
