In natural Tragopogon allotetraploids, we identify two populations without nucleolar dominance, one population with partial nucleolar dominance, and three populations with complete nucleolar dominance. Unexpectedly, populations with a reduced number of T. dubius copies usually show nearly complete suppression of the second genome donor, suggesting that there is an inverse correlation between gene copies and their expression capacity.
