AnnotationWe analysed clonal traits among wetland habitats of the Netherlands. We used multivariate techniques (CCA) using species frequency data and permutation tests using presence/absence data. We found that clonal plants in truly aquatic habitats (open fresh water, open marine habitats and river beds) were characterised by the abundant production of dispersable propagules, annual shoots and splitting clones. Salt marshes were typical of medium dispersability, whereas bog species had perennial shoots and low offspring production. The specificity of river beds and open fresh waters was also confirmed by permutation tests.
