In this study the age-related changes in the temporal processing of acoustical signals in the auditory system of pigmented rats was investigated by behavioral and electrophysiological methods. A worsening of gap detection and gap discrimination thresholds as well as significant changes in amplitude-rate function of click-evoked cortical potentials were obtained in old rats in comparison with young adult rats. The data show that aging in rats is accompanied with a pronounced deficit in the temporal processing of acoustical signals that is associated with the deteriorated function of the central auditory system.
