Plasmas induced by UV laser ablation were studied and analysed using time-of-flight measurements. A KrF laser beam of 23 ns full width at half maximum time duration was focused on Si and Nb targets with moderate laser irradiance of 10^8 W/cm^2. The analysis of time-resolved ion collector signals has revealed that the ambipolar electric field significantly influences the expansion of ions carrying various charges into the vacuum and allows to separate the thermal and centre-of-mass motions of ions.
