This work presents a summary of 50-year investigations on discontinuous respiration in insects. Basic conclusions in this field were made 50-years ago and since that time the theory became a myth many times mutilated, corrupted and misinterpreted by various authors, without knowledge of the original statements and conclusions. The paper describes fundamental experimental procedures and description of several newly developed methods for recording extracardiac pulsations in haemocoelic pressure, monitoring of respiratory movements and advanced respirographic recording of oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide release. It provides experimental evidence that inspirations and expirations of air through insect spiracles are actively regulated by an autonomic, parasympathetic-like neuroendocrine system of invertebrate animals, discovered in the Czech academy of Sciences before many years.
