Wear of ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) is regarded as one of the major causes of total joint replacements (TJR) failures. However, quantification of wear particles in well-defined zones around TJR is quite difficult and, according to available literature, there are just a few studies on the subject. In this work, we employed our previously developed sampling, isolation and quantification techniques and proved the correlation between extent of tissue damage in particular zones around TJR and concentration of particles in these zones. Therefore, our method is a tool for analysis of TJR failures, because it can confirm if the UHMWPE wear was the real cause of TJR failure.
