We evaluated the distribution of main clonal types across wetland communities of the Netherlands. The most common type were rhizomes followed by stolons, whereas root-derived types were underrepresented. Among communities, fresh water pools and open salt water hosted higher proportion of species with turions and fragments, whereas permanently wet communities (bog and wet heathland) were typical of epigeogenous rhizomes. Lateral spread was the most important plant trait characterising types of clonal organs.
