Conference paper reviews various approaches to social research and then focuses on cluster analysis as a method of extraction of psychological types from large samples survey data. Schwartz Value questionnaire responses from ESS database are used to extract relevant types of Czech mentalities: Social Liberals, Ascetic Traditionalists, Withdrawn Negativists and young Hedonistic Individualists. These types differ in their political views, opinions on EU, EU citizenship, immigration, religious tendencies, as well as in social behavior: civility, and various manifestations of co-otherness. The cluster analysis method is suitable for revealing mentalities and ideologies otherwise hidden in data of great data samples.
