    Mutations in TMEM70 gene encoding a 30kD mitochondrial protein of unknown function prevent ATP synthase biogenesis and are found in most known patients with mitochondrial disease due to decreased ATP synthase content. TMEM70 represents a new ancillary factor of mammalian ATP synthase. As revealed by phylogenetic analysis, TMEM70 is specific for higher eukaryotes
