AnnotationWe investigated the phylogenetic position of Ellopostoma based on nuclear sequence data (RAG-1 gene). Ellopostoma is a member of the superfamily Cobitoidea (loaches) of Cypriniformes, but does not belong to any of the currently recognised families. It represents an independent lineage, recognised as a distinct new family Ellopostomatidae, characterized by a square and oblique snout, a small protrusible mouth, a single pair of barbels, large eyes and 35-38 pharyngeal teeth.
