The article points out the dependence of the neutral status on attitudes of the aggressive powers throughout the Second World War. It further describes the U.S. path towards intervention in the European war – the uneasy transition of a neutral into a belligerent. Finally, it focuses on three South European neutrals (Spain, Portugal and Turkey) and their respective policies towards the opposing sides that reflected the changing strategic situation in Europe.
