AnnotationMelatonin reduces blood pressure, enhances nitric oxide availability and scavenges free radicals, but there are few data about the effect of melatonin treatment on left ventricular remodeling associated with hemodynamic overload. Chronic melatonin treatment prevented the development of left ventricular fibrosis and the increase in oxidative load in rats with L-NAME-induced hypertension. The antifibrotic effect of melatonin is independent of its effects on NO synthase activity and might be linked to its antioxidant properties
