Phospholipid signalling in both plant and animal cells is one of the well accepted mechanisms of stress signal transduction. Phospholipase A2, D and phosphoinositide-specific phospholipase C (PI-PLC) are key enzymes of this signalling pathway. These enzymes are organised into a complex network, which is then able to react specifically to different extracellular stimuli. Recently, it was shown that another phospholipase C - specific for phosphatidylcholine (PC-PLC) - exists in plants. Three months-old tobacco plants were treated with elicitor (heat-killed cells of Pseudomonas syringae bacteria). Level of fluorescently labelled diacylglycerol (BODIPY-DAG) in tobacco leaves decreased during four hours till 10% of untreated control. BODIPY-DAG is a product of PC-PLC enzymatic activity in plant cells and therefore these preliminary results suggest inhibition of PC-PLC during response to elicitor treatment.
