AnnotationUV spectroscopy from HST of the X-ray black hole binary HD 226868 = Cyg X-1 is presented together with ground-based observations of H alpha and HeII 4686 A lines. The results are compared and match well with model UV wind line profiles assuming that X-ray ionization occurs everywhere in the wind except the zone where the supergiant blocks the X-ray flux.
