Here we report the successful cultivation of B. microti directly from soil samples that have been collected on the same locality seven years after primary isolation. The particular metabolic capabilities of B. microti and its persistence in the soil over a long time-period indicate that soil might be the natural habitat of this pathogen of rodents.
