AnnotationThe effect of the addition of a small amount of the third component on the phase structure of immiscible binary polymer blends was studied. Polystyrene/polyamide/high density polyethylene (PS/PA/HDPE) blends with the components well distinguishable by scanning electron microscopy were chosen as model systems. Remarkable nonuniformity of the phase structure was observed in PS/PA/HDPE blends. It was found that, in contrast to other blends with negative spreading coefficients for the both dispersed components described in the literature, admixture of HDPE has not significant effect on the size of PA particles dispersed in PS matrix.
